SUPPLEMENTAL ARTWORK
In MAME, you can now define your own font for the UI menu, change the look of the default crosshair, and use external files to simulate scanlines and other effects to make your game-playing experience look more realistic. Here's some starter files below:
EFFECTS
Twisty has done a nice job of compiling the user-submitted effects files to simulate arcade monitors at the
MW MAME Help messageboard. These are simply posted here also for completeness. Unzip to your artwork directory.

FONTS
With the release of 0.107, MAME now has support for different fonts in the User Interface menu. Simply take any .BDF font, name it to ui.bdf, and place it in your MAME directory, and you're good to go.
As a mainly Windows, user, however, I had never heard of BDF fonts (they're an X-Windows thing as far as I can tell). Anyway, I found this neat little program that converts TTF fonts to BDF, called otf2bdf. To make the font show up decent enough, you need to make sure to convert it to a big enough point size. I used the following commandline when converting the ones below:
C:\>otf2bdf -p 48 fontname.ttf -o ui.bdf
Below are some of the ones that came out half-decent. Just click on the pic, and unzip the file to your MAME directory. More coming soon (or whenever...)
CROSSHAIRS
In addition to your own UI font, you can now also define your own crosshair in games that use that feature. MAME already has its own built-in; this are here simply if you would like a change. Download your choice from the list below, and unzip to your artwork directory. Note that this will replace the crosshair for ALL games in MAME.
If you want to turn off crosshairs for ALL games, without having to toggle [F1] for every game, simply download the Transparent Crosshair below. (Useful for lightgun owners).
DOCK ICONS
So Ad_Enuff decided to make up some nice nifty icons for programs such as StarDock, etc. Each is a high-quality 256x256 PNG file, for your icon pleasure. Click the pic for the zip.
