When walk along, you can shield yourself with this by holding the stick up, and swinging your sword. * Defeat the first boss with ease - Assuming you have collected the sword powerup and have both shadow duplicates, position yourself in the center of the screen while the boss is rising from the ground and do a super jump (hold up and jump). When you land on the ground, you should have your shadows flatting in mid air above you.
