24-07-03 This
site is mainly here for it's historical content, that's not to say it's
all out of date, many of the articles are still very relevant today. For
more up-to-the-minute help I suggest EasyEmu.
For a blast from the past, and help with older emulators, or for a trip
down memory lane, then have a look around here. ~RocLobsta~
02-04-01 Wow, it's been
ages! Well, with all the other support sites at MAMEWorld I guess I let this slip a bit.
Well, an update and cleanup is on its way, most of the info here is still relevant and
necessary, and the board is well busy. In the
meantime Marshall sent in another update to the controller layouts page with a new method
of displaying these in your frontend thanks to Jeremu. Thanks you two :) - KiLLerCloWn -
02-04-01 Two
updates today, I've had them for a few days but forgot to add them, apologising humbly:
The Super Breakout .doc file has been updated correctly in the controller layouts section
after double checking with the original. Use this to have the correct controller image in
your frontend.
The Keyboard Hacks Info page has been updated with
the matrix for an Apricot Computers RT-6656TUK keyboard
so if you're attempting a hack, here's all you need to know for mapping your keys for this
type of board. Thanks go out to Oliver Wells for providing this info.
That's all folks :) - KiLLerCloWn -
15-03-01 Related
to the news below, Marshall just sent in an update to the controller layouts and added the
Super Breakout control panel image. With a bit of luck we will also be posting a
screenshot archive in the near future thanks to his work so keep checking back for that :) - KiLLerCloWn -
21-02-01 As
hyped, here is the latest addition to EmuAdvice with huge kudos going out to Marshall
Brooks for developing this very cool idea. What's it all about? Well basically he has
created a few files which will allow you to view the original button and controller
layouts of the arcade machine for whichever game you play in MAME through a screenshot or
controller Window in your favourite frontend! He has also created templates and documets
which allow you to create your own controller layout images very easily. And he has
written up a very detailed manual on how to use or make these very easily. In short,
launch your frontend, select the game you want to play and see the controls and buttons as
on the original machine and on your controller in the screenshot window! Very very cool!
Check it all out in the Support/Controller Layouts Section! - KiLLerCloWn -
10-02-01 Whaddya
say, I do actually still get around to updating this page from time to time :) With such
class acts as DOSMAME and EasyEmu now at MameWorld the support here really is outstanding
and I'll have a hard time to compete with those guys, especially since this is not the
only page I'm taking care of here. Do not depsair tho, I can already announce a very very
very cool addition in the near future to do with arcade controls and frontends...provided
by our most prolific contributor. Say no more hehe :) And in the meantime I've updated the
links page with some more essentials:
Arcade
Rom Heaven
Twin Galaxies
Emulation
Programmers Resource
Final Burn
Sega Museum
Classic
Arcade Project
Arcade
Sticks
Cinema Arcade
Homearcade
Gaming Force Audio Page
Stay tuned for more.... - KiLLerCloWn -
10-12-00 Phew
it's been a while since the last update here but Marshall has got busy again and sent in
another appendix to his display tweak pages. Amazing as always he's listed the indicvidual
settings for around 500 MAME games so that you will get full screen display without any of
the black bars on the sides. Check out the Display Tweaks Page
and the new Appendix
I've also been collecting more links so the Links Page will be
receiving another facelift shortly, too :) -
KiLLerCloWn -
30-10-00 I uploaded Zipdl a
very cool little utility allowing you to open zip files online before downloading the
ehole archive and then choosing which of the included files to get. Ver y handy :)
Thanks for putting it online Prophet Find it on
the Useful Files Page. - KiLLerCloWn -
30-9-00 Marshall
Brooks' keyboard hack has been updated and partly rewritten thanks to some new input by
Andy Warne and Marshall mapping out and including tha PC Concepts Matrix! Good stuff,
thanks Marshall :))
- Added more information about
the PC Concepts KWD-203 Keyboard to Tools/Materials required.
- Added information about some
older keyboards not working with diodes due to low scanning voltage to the "Why is
there so much confusion paragraph. (Thanks Andy Warne)
- Added repair information to the
Keyboard Hack Disadvantages Soldering Paragraph (Thanks again Andy Warne).
- Added new paragraph Keyboard
Hack Disadvantages Number of Independent Inputs.
- Revised the Keyboard Hack
Disadvantages Secondary Keyboard Paragraph to delete information about the I-PAC
pass-thru only being recommended for temporary connection of the keyboard. Andy has
revised the code so it is now fully functional except for the LEDs, as mentioned.
- Added additional information to
the Keyboard Hack Disadvantages Shift Key Functions Paragraph. (Again per Andy
Warne).
- Revised Tool/Materials Required
and Second Keyboard alternatives to clarify key blocking in USB (per Andy Warne).
- Revised the Disassembly
Paragraph to be more neutral to the old clicky-type keyboards.
- Under choosing the keys,
changed the order of the keys and added recommendations for when to add the tab and enter
key functions to MAME.
- Under choosing the keys, added
Delete as a recommended key for Joystick Down.
- Added a highly technical
section to the Choosing the Keys section about a different way to assign keys than the
"one key per row plus joystick keys" method.
- Under Verification, revised the
Keyscan description to state that the program also cannot differentiate between the Enter
and keypad Enter keys.
- Under Installation, added a
recommendation to back up the C:\MAME\CFG\default.cfg file.
- Revised Appendix A Title to
specify it only applies to the DR-104 keyboard and improved description of terminal
location in Appendix A.
- Added Appendix B PC
Concepts KWD-203 Keyboard Matrix:

25-9-00 Marshall
Brooks does it again! After the display tweaks he this time wrote up an exteeeensive page
on how to get your keyboard hack organised successfully. Everything you need to know and
more is included, very valuable info indeed! Big thanks again to Marshall for his
outstanding work :) - KiLLerCloWn -
11-9-00 I
just upped a slight new addition to the Memory Tweaks page, namely the autoexec.bat and
config.sys files of uberMan as posted on our messageboard (thanks for that uberMan :))
These include the memory manager lines which he uses to get around lockups and pagefaults
when trying to play large roms in DOS. Hopefully it will help some of you with similar
probs :) - KiLLerCloWn -
15-8-00 Whahey,
this is what it's all about here at EmuAdvice! Two new support sections are up:
- The Dual Boot Page with everything you need to know
about how to setup a dual boot system under Win2k so that all our emulationwise crippled
friends with this OS can enjoy their favourites again.
- The Display Optimisation Page which lets you know how
to twaek your display to play most games full screen. Big kudos go out to Marshall Brooks
who's done an awesome job on collecting all the info. Here we'd also like to learn about
your experiences with his procedure as so far ot has only been tested on his system! Let
us know :)
More to follow soon :) Find it all in the support
section! - KiLLerCloWn -
13-6-00 My
God, it's been ages since the last update here. Too busy with MameWorld and personal life
at the mo. Still, the content continues to be valid, the board is busier than ever and the
page will continue to grow. I'm planning a page on dual booting as many people, especially
Win2K users, are interested in this. For the mo another update to the links pages with
more fun and useful stuff :) Here's what I added today:
Surf on! - KiLLerCloWn -
20-3-00 More
cool and useful links for you to browse during the slow days :) Here's what I added to the
links page:
Have fun :) -
KiLLerCloWn -
23-2-00 Just
added another tidbit about getting your SB LIVE! to work in pure DOS. This procedure was
worked out by Shifty, hopefully it can help some of you out...check the sound woes section
under support :) - KiLLerCloWn -
22-2-00 Upped
Wavetosam to the useful files section, a handy little utility to convert .wav files into
.sam files which MAME used up to version 35b10. Thanks for that one Ken :) - KiLLerCloWn -
7-2-00 Thanks
Till for another Redump file. Now up to
version.29 and includng support for "Mutation Nation" it will fix all the NeoGeo
sets which, due to rom changes or dump changes are not compatible with Mame anymore. Now
the are again :) Get it from the Useful Files Page - KiLLerCloWn -
3-2-00 Just
added QPlayer 1.1.6 to the useful files section. Qsounds from your favourite Capcom games
at your fingertips :) Enjoy! - KiLLerCloWn -
11-1-00 Today
I added a quick update on some motherboard issues with PCI soundcards to the sound woes
section...yet another reason for your PCI cards not to work in DOS :) Shifty found this
tip from FRK at Dave's board. Thanks Shifty, thanks FRK :)
- KiLLerCloWn -
10-1-00 Added
the latest Redump file to the useful files section. Amongst 21 other games it now also
converts "Last Resort" inot the MVS version supported by MAME. Thanks :)
- KiLLerCloWn -
6-1-00 Whahey!
Happy flippin' birthday EmuAdvice! One year today and still going strong, trying to be
useful and helping out where we can :) Special Update today then:

sites:
2) The Useful Files section was updated
with the following utilities:

24-12-99 Merry
Flippin' Christams Everyone!!! Enjoy the
festivities! :)

19-12-99 JoyMame
has been updated and brought into line with Mame 36beta12. Thanks once again Rob! In case
you forgot here's what it can do for you:
- There is an additional menu for games with analog
controls called "Analog Axis". On this menu, you can use the left and right keys
to choose which analog joystick axis corresponds to which analog axis in the
game. "default" still chooses the first analog stick. Thus, you can swap the X
and Y axes with any controller
- Added in an option to the analog controls menu to
toggle auto-centering on and off, as was done in optimame
- The mouse buttons can be toggled to be either
distinct buttons or
to duplicate Joystick 1's buttons. This is an option in
the Analog Axis
menu. That should make things easier for people who
want the mouse to
work with their default assignments.
- The mouse axes can be set from the Analog Axis menu
to map to any
player and axis. This helps in two particular
situations: It allows you
to rotate the mouse and swap the X and Y axes, and it
lets people build
2-players controls that physically connect to the mouse
X and Y axes.
- Allows you to save all of the analog settings, at
least globally. They are then automatically reloaded on startup.
- Debug output is created for all joysticks, in
"joy.out".
- If an invalid joystick name is entered, the user is
asked for a valid
- one, with a menu (like with sound).
- Unsigned axes (such as throttles, commonly) are fixed
in MAME.
- Throttles register digitally, and can be used as
buttons.
- A held-down button will not mess up the joystick
settings process.
- Some more small Allegro fixes, such as in the axis
name
Get the file here
I also fixed the link to the Zelda 64 fix on the
useful files page. Thanks to Eric Brugei for pointing that one out :)
- KiLLerCloWn -
12-12-99 Useful
Files section fixed! No thanks to Xoom! 23MB of uploads
and endless searchig for files on all different kinds of media mean that all the useful
files arte back up again and hosted right here at MameWorld! Get everything from usefule
emulation utilities, compression and download proggies, graphics and sound software. All
you need to make your emulation experience complete :) And no, no warez here, only free or
shareware and evaluation copies...enjoy :)
Choose Useful Files from the link/start menu on the
left.
- KiLLerCloWn -
8-12-99 First of all an apology for some missing files in the useful files
section. Thgey were mostly dumped at Xoom still remaining there from my previous site and
Xoom kindly closed down the account for no particular reason. They will be back up once i
located them on my backup CDs and uploded them to MameWorld.
I would also like to thank Fotunecity for
introducing a script which prevents the linking of gif, jpgs etc. What is the point of
having your stuff online if you can only post it on your site alone? duh!
Secondly
JoyMame is now in synch with beta 11. You know it's good so get it here If you don't know what it's about just check the news
below :)
Thirdly
ditto for Emu+. If you go to MameWorld's
main page you'll find a mirror there
Fourth, I
know I've been a bit behind in updating the emus lately. Recent releases of Rain, ZSNES et
al will be up shortly. Files which have disappeared with my Xoom account will be replaced
as new releases come in...
Have fun everybody :)

22-11-99 More
JoyMame from Rob! This is the update in line with Mame 36b10. Here's what's featured:
- Support for a second mouse is enabled. Simply plug the mouse in
(*after*
Windows has booted up, so it doesn't grab the second mouse too)
and
load the second mouse driver. There are versions for both serial
and ps/2 ports.
This support was provided by Andy in Opti-MAME. (You may want to
look at
that, too, if you're interested in this). The mouse drivers are in the
"mouse"
subdirectory; "mouse2.com" should do in general.
- A hackish workaround for the sample reporting problem. Should work
with
all the frontends and still be able to verify samples with things like
ClearMame.
- Compiled with Allegro WIP 3.9.28.
Fixed a silly problem with the M92 names.
Plus all the usual controller optios asscociated
with this file. Thanks Rob :)
Get it here
- KiLLerCloWn -
7-11-99 Slight
update to JoyMame. Rob fixed the N64 controller bug so you can now connect this controller
without problems again. It was merely and issue of changing a typo in the source which
pointed allegro to a PSX controller instead of the N64 one. therefore it didn't egt
recognised correctly. Thanks for the quick fix Rob :)

1-11-99 Same
news as below, things are moving quickly this weekend :)
1) New release of Emu+ available:
Check out what's new here
Get the file here
The source is available here here
2) Beta 8 release of JoyMame available (thanks for
the nth time Rob:))
Here's what's new again:
- The mouse buttons can be toggled to be either
distinct buttons or
to duplicate Joystick 1's buttons. This is an option in
the Analog Axis
menu. That should make things easier for people who
want the mouse to
work with their default assignments.
- The mouse axes can be set from the Analog Axis menu

player and axis. This helps in two particular
situations: It allows you
to rotate the mouse and swap the X and Y axes, and it

X and Y axes.
- Allows you to save all of the analog settings, at
least globally. They are then automatically reloaded on startup.
Get it here :)

30-10-99 Thanks
to Dan Manya for releasing yet another generation of EmuPlus, the MAME compile with a lot
of extra useful features. He also let us know that the Windows version of his compile will
be available soon!
Check out what's new here

24-10-99 Without
even waiting for beta 8 Rob has improved the MameJoy file with the following additions.
There's just no stopping some people :)
- Debug output is created for all joysticks, in
"joy.out".
- If an invalid joystick name is entered, the user is asked for
a valid
- one, with a menu (like with sound).
- Unsigned axes (such as throttles, commonly) are fixed in MAME.
- Throttles register digitally, and can be used as buttons.
- A held-down button will not mess up the joystick settings
process.
- Some more small Allegro fixes, such as in the axis names
Cheers Rob :-) Get it in the Downloads/Useful Files section

21-10-99 More
Rob related news then with his new MameJoy file. Here's what it can do for you:
-
There is an additional menu for games with analog controls called
"Analog Axis". On this menu, you can use the left and right keys to
choose which analog joystick axis corresponds to which analog axis in the game.
"default" still chooses the first analog stick. Thus, you can swap the X and Y
axes with any controller.
Added in an option to the analog controls menu to toggle
auto-centering on and off, as was done in optimame
Now I know from tha boards that many people were looking for these
options so go get it in the Downloads/Useful Files section and enjoy :-) Thanks Rob!
- KiLLerCloWn -
20-10-99 What
would EmuAdvice be without Rob's GripMame eh? So in true appreciation of his talents
here's the latest update, inline with Mame 36 beta 7. The improvements over the official
version are the following:
- Analog support should work (i.e., the analog pad on the Xterminator
should work smoothly)
-
Fixes annoying (but harmless) crashes upon exiting that occur on a few
systems.
- Produces a "grip.out" file that shows the state of your
joysticks and
is useful for debugging.
-
Includes a grip.gll file, in case you don't have one around.
-
Pentium-optimized, and stronger optimizations in general
Thanks Rob! Go grab it in the Downloads/Useful Files section kids
:-)
- KiLLerCloWn -
5-10-99 Right,
I updated thew links page once again. Some links I just fixed and a few ones were added.
Including these fine sites:
MameMia
Retro FX
The Basement
Arcade
RB-Joy
Tigga Soft
GameSX
Arcade Solutions
IceMan2K's
Sega Saturn MP3's
If you haven't been to any of these I
suggest giving them a click, they're all well worth checking out. If you want to know what
they're about first check out the links page for a short sumary. Enjoy :-)
- KiLLerCloWn -
1-10-99 Same
news as below only that this is the release in line with Mame version 36 beta 6 :-)
Also in the in the Downloads/Useful Files
section. Thanks again Rob!
- KiLLerCloWn -
12-9-99 Added
Rob's MameGrip with numerous fixes, a really cool release this time :-)
-
- adds Gravis Grip and Exterminator support
- fixes the Sidweinder issue
- improves analog control setup
- fixes all known Namco System bugs (at least the ones he knew
about :-))
- is generally great :-)
- Get it in the Downloads/Useful Files section
- KiLLerCloWn -
11-9-99 Today
I added Joyemu and Mousestick, two joystick utilities. The first let's you configure and
use a joystick in programs which do not natively support one, the latter lets you control
your mouse cursor with your joystick. Both are in the downloads/useful liles section.
- KiLLerCloWn -
10-9-99 Well,
we've got a new board. Not 'cos we didn't like the old one but 'cos it crashed into
unrepairable mayhem when Shifty posted a message. Nice one Shifty, takes real skill that
lol :-) Nothing changed though, it's just a new board of the same kind. So go and post
your queries and see whether we can send Shifty into another spasm lol
- KiLLerCloWn -
6-9-99 Thanks
to Robert J. Ragno who has made version 36b4 of his GripMame available. This adds Gravis
Grip and Exterminator support and also fixes the Sidewinder issue affecting the latest
Mame releases. Use the option "-joy grip" for your gravis pads. Use "-joy
grip4" to use four directions only for better controls in such games as pacman. Use
"-joy sidewinder" to have fully functional sidewinder support. Great work as
usual Rob :-)
4-9-99 Another
update of the support section today. Thanks to Saint and Videoman's tips I added instructions on how to connect
two mice to one system to play two player trackball games with your emus. Pretty easy
actually, once you know how it's done. The explanation is in the Support Section under
"Controller Problems".
- KiLLerCloWn -
26-8-99 I
just added the very cool MAMELANG Mame binary. This is a
multi language supporting version of Mame 36b3. It has an in-built translation utility
which loads with Mame and you can choose from the command prompt which language you would
like to see your Mame in. Basically the end result is the same as one of the translated
Mame's except that you can choose which language you would like to see it in. It's a very
cool file available in the Useful Files section. Make sure to read the documentation and
don't bother the Mame team with any queries. Turn to the MAMELANG home page with any
queries!
- KiLLerCloWn -
26-8-99 Robert J.
Ragno has updated his MameGrip file to the 36b3 release of Mame. This file adds Gravis
Grip and Exterminator support to Mame. Theoretically also Gamepad Pro but that hasn't been
tested yet. It also fixes the Sidewinder bug and allows you to make full use of this pad.
Use it with the "-joy grip" option for any Gravis pads, and use the "-joy
grip4" command to use your Gravis as a 4 way only directional device for such games
as Pacman etc. You can get it in the Useful Files section. Enjoy, and thanks Rob :-)
- KiLLerCloWn -
24-8-99
First addition at the new location :-) I added ZDKeyMap by
Ziff-Davis Publishing. It is freeware and allows you to remap *all* your keyboard keys to
whatever function you like. Here's what it says:
ZDKeyMap adds a property page to the Control Panel's
Keyboard applet that lets you remap all the standard keys on your keyboard. Thus you can
swap the CapsLock and Left Ctrl keys to avoid pressing CapsLock accidentally, or turn
little-used keyson a notebook into other keys that the notebook may be missing. ZDKeyMap
works only with standard keys; it does not support extended keys.
This should come in very useful for those of you who
like to play with the ctrl and alt buttons and accidentally hit the Windows button during
the game,or similar mishaps. Very annoying that is :-)
Find it in the "Downloads/Useful Files"
section!

22-8-99 Hi
eveybody and welcome to EmuAdvice! Thanks to our hosts Zan and Atila for making this
possible. Hopefully we can contribute to making Mameworld one of the premier Mame sites on
the web and to even further increasing Retrogames' renommé in the world of emulation. We
hope you'll enjoy the site and find lots of useful stuff here. It's all here to help you
kids enjoy our wonderful hobby even more. Have fun :-)
